TENCEL™ Lyocell
A botanical fibre from eucalyptus wood pulp that outperforms cotton in every metric that matters for sleep: breathability, moisture management, and cooling.
TENCEL™ Lyocell
TENCEL™ Lyocell is a botanic fibre derived from sustainably harvested eucalyptus wood pulp, produced in a closed-loop manufacturing process with 99% water recovery. The fibre has a naturally smooth, circular cross-section structure that creates 50% more breathability than cotton, manages moisture 50% faster, and produces significantly less friction against skin. It is naturally hypoallergenic and biodegradable.

What Makes TENCEL™ Lyocell Different
TENCEL™ Lyocell is fundamentally different from cotton and synthetic fibres. It is produced from eucalyptus wood pulp using a closed-loop solvent spinning process; meaning the solvent (NMMO) is recovered and reused at 99% efficiency, making it one of the most sustainable fibre production processes available.
The key to TENCEL™'s performance is its fibre structure. Cotton fibres have an irregular, rough surface. TENCEL™ Lyocell fibres have a naturally smooth, circular cross-section. This smooth structure creates several advantages:
1. Better air circulation: The smooth fibre surface allows air to pass through the fabric more freely, increasing breathability by 50% over cotton.
2. Superior moisture management: The fibre structure absorbs moisture into the interior of the fibre and releases it rapidly; 50% faster than cotton, which absorbs moisture but releases it slowly.
3. Lower friction: The smooth surface creates significantly less friction against skin, making it ideal for sensitive skin and reducing sleep creases.
4. Natural hypoallergenic properties: The smooth fibre structure provides less surface area for bacteria to adhere to, making TENCEL™ naturally more hygienic than cotton.

TENCEL™ Lyocell for Hot Sleepers
For hot sleepers, TENCEL™ Lyocell is the most effective natural cooling fabric available. Its combination of breathability, moisture management, and smooth surface makes it particularly suited to hot, humid climates like the UAE.
The cooling mechanism of TENCEL™ is primarily moisture-based: as the body sweats during sleep, TENCEL™ fibres rapidly absorb the moisture and transport it to the fabric surface for evaporation. This evaporative cooling process is the body's natural cooling mechanism, and TENCEL™ facilitates it 50% more efficiently than cotton.
While TENCEL™ does not have the same instant cool-to-touch sensation as phase-change fabrics (CoolTouch® Q-Max 0.38 vs TENCEL™ Q-Max 0.25), it provides sustained cooling through superior moisture management throughout the night. This is why The Sleep Lab™ uses TENCEL™ Lyocell in its bedding sets; combined with CoolTouch® phase-change fabric for instant cooling, the two technologies work synergistically.

TENCEL™ Lyocell vs Cotton
In every metric that matters for sleep quality, TENCEL™ Lyocell outperforms cotton:
• Breathability: TENCEL™ is 50% more breathable, allowing better air circulation through the fabric. • Moisture management: TENCEL™ absorbs and releases moisture 50% faster, preventing the damp-bedding discomfort that fragments sleep. • Cooling: TENCEL™'s Q-Max of 0.25 W/cm² provides better cooling than cotton's 0.10–0.15 W/cm². • Hypoallergenic: TENCEL™'s smooth fibre structure is naturally more hygienic than cotton's rough surface. • Skin comfort: TENCEL™'s smooth surface creates less friction, reducing sleep creases and skin irritation. • Sustainability: TENCEL™ is produced from sustainably harvested eucalyptus in a closed-loop process with 99% water recovery. Cotton farming is water-intensive and chemical-intensive.
For the UAE climate, where heat and humidity prevent effective evaporative cooling with standard cotton, TENCEL™ Lyocell is the natural fabric of choice.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is TENCEL™ Lyocell?
TENCEL™ Lyocell is a botanic fibre derived from sustainably harvested eucalyptus wood pulp, produced in a closed-loop process with 99% water recovery. It is 50% more breathable than cotton, 50% faster at moisture management, naturally hypoallergenic, and biodegradable.
Is TENCEL™ cooling?
Yes. TENCEL™ Lyocell has a Q-Max rating of 0.25 W/cm²; significantly better than cotton (0.10–0.15). Its primary cooling mechanism is moisture management: it absorbs and releases sweat 50% faster than cotton, facilitating the body's natural evaporative cooling process.
Is TENCEL™ better than cotton for sleep?
Yes; in every metric that matters for sleep: 50% more breathable, 50% faster moisture management, better cooling (Q-Max 0.25 vs 0.10–0.15), naturally hypoallergenic, lower friction against skin, and more sustainably produced.
Is TENCEL™ good for the UAE climate?
Yes; TENCEL™ is particularly suited to hot, humid climates like the UAE. Its superior moisture management is critical when high humidity prevents effective evaporative cooling with standard cotton. Combined with CoolTouch® phase-change fabric, it creates the most effective natural cooling sleep system available.
