Comparison
Cooling vs Linen
Linen is breathable and natural, but CoolTouch® provides active cooling that linen cannot match. Here is the honest comparison.
Cooling Fabric vs Linen
Cooling fabric (CoolTouch® phase-change, Q-Max 0.38) and linen (Q-Max ~0.18–0.20) are both breathable materials, but they use different cooling mechanisms. Linen provides passive cooling through air permeability; its loose weave allows air to circulate. CoolTouch® provides active cooling through phase-change heat absorption. The Q-Max difference (0.38 vs 0.18–0.20) means CoolTouch® provides approximately 2× the instant cooling of linen, plus sustained cooling that linen cannot match.

How Linen Cools vs How CoolTouch® Cools
Linen and CoolTouch® use fundamentally different cooling mechanisms:
Linen (Q-Max 0.18–0.20): • Passive cooling through air permeability: Linen has a loose, open weave that allows air to circulate through the fabric. • Moisture management: Linen absorbs moisture and releases it relatively quickly; better than cotton but not as good as TENCEL™ Lyocell. • No active heat absorption: Linen cannot absorb and store body heat. It provides a cooling sensation through air circulation, but this effect diminishes as the fabric warms. • Textured surface: Linen has a characteristic texture that some people find less comfortable against skin than smoother fabrics.
CoolTouch® Phase-Change Fabric (Q-Max 0.38): • Active cooling through phase-change materials: PCM micro-capsules absorb and store body heat when skin temperature rises above 35°C. • 2× the instant cooling: Q-Max 0.38 vs linen's 0.18–0.20. • Sustained cooling: The PCM continuously absorbs heat across the 8-hour sleep cycle, maintaining surface temperature 4.2°C below standard bedding. • Self-regulating: The PCM releases stored heat when skin temperature drops, maintaining a stable thermal microclimate.
For hot sleepers who need significant, sustained cooling, CoolTouch® is clearly superior to linen.

Breathability vs Active Cooling
A common misconception is that breathability equals cooling. While breathability is important, it is not the same as active cooling:
Linen's breathability: Linen's open weave allows air to pass through the fabric, which helps evaporate sweat and provides a cooling sensation through air circulation. This is effective in dry, temperate climates where air can absorb moisture effectively.
However, in the UAE's humid climate (60–80% humidity in coastal areas), linen's evaporative cooling is significantly impaired. When the air is already saturated with moisture, sweat cannot evaporate efficiently, and linen's primary cooling mechanism is compromised.
CoolTouch®'s active cooling: CoolTouch® does not rely on evaporation; it uses phase-change materials that physically absorb and store body heat. This mechanism works regardless of humidity, making it effective in the UAE's humid climate where linen's evaporative cooling is impaired.
This is a critical distinction for UAE sleepers: linen may feel comfortable in a dry climate, but in the UAE's humidity, its cooling effectiveness is significantly reduced. CoolTouch®'s active heat absorption works regardless of ambient humidity.

The Best of Both Worlds
Rather than choosing between CoolTouch® and linen, the best approach combines CoolTouch®'s active cooling with a superior breathable, moisture-wicking fibre. The Sleep Lab™ uses CoolTouch® + TENCEL™ Lyocell:
TENCEL™ Lyocell vs Linen: • 50% more breathable than cotton (and significantly more breathable than linen's already-good breathability) • 50% faster moisture management than cotton (and faster than linen) • Ultra-smooth surface (unlike linen's characteristic texture) • Naturally hypoallergenic • Closed-loop sustainable production
CoolTouch® + TENCEL™ provides: • Active heat absorption (CoolTouch® Q-Max 0.38); works regardless of humidity • Superior moisture management (TENCEL™); 50% faster than cotton • Ultra-smooth surface (TENCEL™); more comfortable than linen's texture • Sustained cooling across 8-hour sleep cycle (CoolTouch® PCM)
This combination is superior to linen in every metric that matters for hot sleepers; cooling, moisture management, comfort, and effectiveness in humid climates. It is why The Sleep Lab™ uses CoolTouch® + TENCEL™ rather than linen.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is CoolTouch® better than linen?
Yes. CoolTouch® (Q-Max 0.38) provides approximately 2× the instant cooling of linen (0.18–0.20) and sustained cooling through phase-change heat absorption that linen cannot match. Linen provides passive cooling through breathability, but this is impaired in humid conditions like the UAE.
Is linen good for hot sleepers?
Linen is better than cotton for hot sleepers due to its breathability, but it provides only passive cooling (Q-Max 0.18–0.20) through air circulation. In the UAE's high humidity, linen's evaporative cooling is significantly impaired. CoolTouch® (Q-Max 0.38) provides active heat absorption that works regardless of humidity.
Is linen or CoolTouch® better for the UAE?
CoolTouch® is clearly better for the UAE. Linen's primary cooling mechanism (evaporative cooling through breathability) is impaired by the UAE's high humidity (60–80%). CoolTouch®'s active heat absorption through phase-change materials works regardless of humidity, making it effective in UAE conditions where linen's cooling is compromised.
What is better than linen for sleep?
CoolTouch® phase-change fabric (Q-Max 0.38, 2× the cooling of linen) combined with TENCEL™ Lyocell (50% more breathable than cotton, 50% faster moisture management, ultra-smooth surface). This combination provides active cooling and superior moisture management that linen cannot match.
