Bamboo Bedding
Bamboo is marketed as "cooling", but the science tells a more nuanced story. Here is the honest comparison with better alternatives.
Bamboo Fabric (Bamboo Viscose)
Bamboo fabric is a regenerated cellulosic fibre made from bamboo pulp. Most "bamboo" bedding is actually bamboo viscose (rayon), produced using a chemical process that dissolves bamboo cellulose and regenerates it into fibres. Bamboo fabric has moderate cooling properties (Q-Max ~0.20 W/cm²); better than cotton but inferior to TENCEL™ Lyocell (Q-Max 0.25) and significantly inferior to phase-change fabrics (CoolTouch® Q-Max 0.38). Its sustainability claims are also contested due to the chemical-intensive production process.

The Truth About Bamboo Fabric
Bamboo fabric is widely marketed as a natural, sustainable, and cooling material. The reality is more nuanced:
1. Most "bamboo" fabric is bamboo viscose (rayon): The bamboo plant is not directly spun into fabric. Instead, bamboo cellulose is dissolved in chemicals (sodium hydroxide, carbon disulfide) and regenerated into fibres. This chemical process is why the US Federal Trade Commission requires bamboo viscose to be labelled as "rayon made from bamboo" rather than simply "bamboo."
2. Moderate cooling: Bamboo fabric has a Q-Max of approximately 0.20 W/cm²; better than cotton (0.10–0.15) but inferior to TENCEL™ Lyocell (0.25) and significantly inferior to phase-change fabrics (CoolTouch® 0.38).
3. Sustainability claims contested: While bamboo is a fast-growing, renewable resource, the chemical-intensive viscose production process is less sustainable than TENCEL™ Lyocell's closed-loop process (99% solvent recovery).
4. Softness: Bamboo viscose is soft and drapes well, but its smoothness does not match TENCEL™ Lyocell's naturally smooth fibre structure.

Bamboo vs TENCEL™ Lyocell
Both bamboo viscose and TENCEL™ Lyocell are regenerated cellulosic fibres, but TENCEL™ is superior in every measurable metric:
• Cooling: TENCEL™ Q-Max 0.25 vs bamboo Q-Max 0.20. TENCEL™ provides 25% stronger instant cooling. • Breathability: TENCEL™ is 50% more breathable than cotton. Bamboo's breathability is moderate; better than cotton but inferior to TENCEL™. • Moisture management: TENCEL™ absorbs and releases moisture 50% faster than cotton. Bamboo has moderate moisture management but is not as effective. • Smoothness: TENCEL™'s naturally circular cross-section creates a smoother surface than bamboo's slightly irregular fibre structure. • Sustainability: TENCEL™ is produced in a closed-loop process with 99% solvent recovery. Bamboo viscose uses a chemical-intensive open process. • Durability: TENCEL™ is more durable and maintains its properties through more wash cycles.
For hot sleepers, TENCEL™ Lyocell is the clearly superior natural fibre choice.

Bamboo vs CoolTouch® Phase-Change Fabric
Bamboo fabric and CoolTouch® phase-change fabric use fundamentally different cooling mechanisms:
• Bamboo (Q-Max 0.20): Provides mild cooling through moisture management. The fabric feels slightly cool initially but warms as it absorbs body heat. Cooling is passive and decreases over the sleep cycle.
• CoolTouch® (Q-Max 0.38): Provides active cooling through phase-change materials that absorb and store body heat. The fabric provides a strong instant cooling sensation and maintains a sustained 3.2–4.2°C lower surface temperature across the full 8-hour sleep cycle.
CoolTouch® provides nearly 2× the instant cooling sensation of bamboo and sustained cooling that bamboo cannot match. For hot sleepers in the UAE, CoolTouch® is the clearly superior technology.
The optimal approach combines both: CoolTouch® phase-change fabric for active surface cooling + TENCEL™ Lyocell for superior moisture management. This is the combination used in The Sleep Lab™ products.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is bamboo bedding cooling?
Bamboo bedding provides moderate cooling (Q-Max ~0.20 W/cm²); better than cotton but inferior to TENCEL™ Lyocell (Q-Max 0.25) and significantly inferior to CoolTouch® phase-change fabric (Q-Max 0.38). For hot sleepers, better alternatives are available.
Is bamboo better than cotton?
Yes, bamboo is slightly better than cotton for cooling and moisture management. However, TENCEL™ Lyocell is superior to bamboo in every metric: 25% stronger cooling, 50% more breathable, 50% faster moisture management, smoother surface, and more sustainably produced.
Is bamboo fabric sustainable?
Bamboo is a fast-growing, renewable resource, but most "bamboo" fabric is actually bamboo viscose; produced using a chemical-intensive process. TENCEL™ Lyocell is more sustainable: produced from eucalyptus in a closed-loop process with 99% solvent recovery.
What is better than bamboo for hot sleepers?
CoolTouch® phase-change fabric (Q-Max 0.38) provides nearly 2× the cooling of bamboo and sustained cooling across the full sleep cycle. TENCEL™ Lyocell (Q-Max 0.25) provides 25% stronger cooling than bamboo with superior moisture management. Both are available from The Sleep Lab™.
